Rig Setup

The typical setup for an overnight to 1.5 day is as follows:

4 poles

1st RIG: 20 – 25 lb. TEST OUTFIT  (Best casting rod) (yellow tail rig and small tuna)

  • Reel - DAIWA SL30, OKUMA 30, SHIMANO 15/30, AVET SX5.1 (try and align to these best you can with what you have)

2nd RIG: 30 – 40 lb. TEST OUTFIT (medium size Tuna)

  • Reel - SHIMANO 20/40, TORIUM 30 , OKUMA 30 OR 50N, AVET LX4.1 (try and align to these best you can with what you have)

3rd RIG: 50 – 60 lb. TEST OUTFIT (yo yo rig)

  •  Reel - 4/0 SIZE STAR OR 20 SIZE LEVER DRAG, AVET HZ (try and align to these best you can with what you have)

·         4rd RIG: 60 – 80 lb. TEST OUTFIT (trolling)

  • Reel -  Big

What is missing with this setup above is

·         5th RIG: 60 – 80 lb. TEST OUTFIT on a 7’ Medium/heavy (big Tuna or marlin)

  • Reel -  Big

My recommendation for our upcoming overnight with what you have is:

·         12-40 lb 7’  match it medium action (35Lbs Mono)

o   Reel ?

·         12-30 lb 7’ medium  (25Lbs Mono) (spare go to)

o   Reel?

·         20-50 lb 6.5’ medium (40Lbs Mono) (yo yo rig)

o   Reel?

·         20-50 lb 7’ medium I bought. (25Lbs Mono) (this is your go to)

o   Reel?

When we get out there and the fish are bigger you will have options

·         switch to

o   12-40 lb 7’ medium action (35Lbs Mono)

o   20-50 lb 6.5’ medium (40Lbs Mono) (yo yo rig)
